Anyway this was our last show and the show before that will be posted sometime this week with a video of Michael competing in the Clay Olympics. How fun is that?! So hear about Lousianna.....<br />
This past month we've been feeling a little rundown. With the Uncommon Goods order and our full show schedule it's been kinda tough but we still need to keep up the momentum until the last show. Then we can collapse.<br />
Or so I thought.<br />
Michael and I both came down with colds and got into this cycle of feeling a bit better then going off to a show, coming home feeling really crummy, then feeling a bit better, then going off to a show....you get the point.<br />
We headed off to Covington, LA for the Covington Three Rivers Art Festival. This is a show that we did 2 years ago, did really well at and then didn't get into last year. Go figure. When Michael got in this year we were excited. Sick and excited.<br />
We really like doing shows in LA. For us LA has good ju-ju and food. Don't forget the shrimp!<br />
This year we requested to be next to a friend of ours Peg Martinez (<a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002258743647&ref=ts"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #20124d;">Square Peg</span></a>) who makes beautiful wooden boxes. It was great to be her neighbor and to catch up with her since we first met her in March in Fairhope, AL. Other than that we were pretty low key because of our lingering viruses. Lucky us.<br />
Across the street from our booth was a cemetery and I went over and took some pictures:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8PsVim1TEKg/Ts0mq29204I/AAAAAAAAAPk/mHNn4fo2yVU/s1600/DSC_0040.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8PsVim1TEKg/Ts0mq29204I/AAAAAAAAAPk/mHNn4fo2yVU/s320/DSC_0040.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-w84yLdVUvsY/Ts0mtsRiDBI/AAAAAAAAAPs/2GTcLiSx22M/s1600/DSC_0045.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-w84yLdVUvsY/Ts0mtsRiDBI/AAAAAAAAAPs/2GTcLiSx22M/s320/DSC_0045.JPG" width="213" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Tpxlzxez_Zw/Ts0mSTrQM4I/AAAAAAAAAOs/hG6J0iKCkmE/s1600/DSC_0017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Tpxlzxez_Zw/Ts0mSTrQM4I/AAAAAAAAAOs/hG6J0iKCkmE/s320/DSC_0017.JPG" width="213" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WsyuXY6Tuz8/Ts0mVRLYziI/AAAAAAAAAO0/MUOjr5MgVn4/s1600/DSC_0018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WsyuXY6Tuz8/Ts0mVRLYziI/AAAAAAAAAO0/MUOjr5MgVn4/s320/DSC_0018.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>Here are all the angels. Ya just can't beat a cemetery in LA. You can see the rest of the pictures that I took by<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #660000;"> </span><a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150482035944903.429854.774399902&type=3"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #660000;">going to my facebook album</span></a>.<br />
Behind our booth was a farmer's market. I went over and bought fresh local satsumas (the best ever!) and fresh in-the-shell pecans (when I got home I shelled them while sipping tea with my friend Stefanie). And speaking of shrimp...Michael and I stopped at a seafood market on our way out of town and bought fresh shrimp (many pounds worth and really big!) and tilapia, and grouper, and tuna, and then the cooler was full.<br />
Looking forward to next year and being at the show in full healthy capacity.terracottagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01368757639633073947noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7307243353559045513.post-27949066405177568652011-11-23T08:56:00.000-08:002011-11-23T08:56:18.644-08:00Love you honey!Go figure that we do two shows in Memphis in the same month and we do well at both of them. What's not to like about being in Memphis and getting to eat at <a href="http://Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken - Downtown - Memphis | Urbanspoon">Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken</a>?<br />
Every year that we do The River Arts Fest, Michael has an opportunity to teach in a public school before the show. The folks of the festival set it up and Michael loves to do it. This year he got to teach for three days in an AP Art Class and I got to go as well and film. He and the kids made a sculpture. Here's the film that I made:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><object class="BLOGGER-youtube-video" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0" data-thumbnail-src="http://i.ytimg.com/vi/r3BEWi_aaFk/0.jpg" height="266" width="320"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/r3BEWi_aaFk?version=3&f=user_uploads&c=google-webdrive-0&app=youtube_gdata" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><embed width="320" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/r3BEWi_aaFk?version=3&f=user_uploads&c=google-webdrive-0&app=youtube_gdata" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"></embed></object></div>It was soooo much fun. I had a blast!<br />
This year we were offered a home-stay while Michael taught and through out the show. We were so lucky to stay with terrific folks, the Moneypenny's. One night we brought home Gus's Fried Chicken for everyone. Hey any chance we can get. We stayed in their guest house and here's a picture I took of their dogs. Aren't they adorable?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8XBZSXdpmj0/Trs82gtNKVI/AAAAAAAAAN0/BO5bIZDglCY/s1600/DSC_0040.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8XBZSXdpmj0/Trs82gtNKVI/AAAAAAAAAN0/BO5bIZDglCY/s320/DSC_0040.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>This is a guy that was walking around the show. He made this himself. Cool, huh?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OWR19q2tp-0/Trs87u-oTnI/AAAAAAAAAN8/l6jtzyc8I5U/s1600/DSC_0042.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OWR19q2tp-0/Trs87u-oTnI/AAAAAAAAAN8/l6jtzyc8I5U/s320/DSC_0042.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>And Michael won an Award of Merit. Here he is with his award and his certificate that say's he was teaching in the school. Hard to tell which one he's more proud of...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-waAb4itexD0/Trs8w2FxWAI/AAAAAAAAANs/N2sTaY5n6zY/s1600/DSC_0034.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-waAb4itexD0/Trs8w2FxWAI/AAAAAAAAANs/N2sTaY5n6zY/s320/DSC_0034.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>I'm just proud of him. We enjoy what we do for a living and we like to travel.<br />
The Pink Palace Crafts Fair is a very fun show for us because a lot of our 'clay' friends are also at this show. It's a good show to sell ceramics at. The fair is in Audubon Park in Memphis. It's a long show, 4 days. It's dusty, we've got to wipe everything off before packing up. But we really like it. Fun factor for this one is high!<br />
This year we had brought some bottles of wine with us and every day around 5 our buddies would come over to our booth with their ceramic goblets (they are potters you know) and we'd crack open a bottle and have a glass of wine together. It's a very social show for us.<br />
In our studio I'm starting a project called "The Wall Of Flame". It's a collage of all of our 'clay' friends that I'm creating on one of the walls of Michael's studio.<br />
Here are some of our 'clay' friends from The Pink Palace show:<br />
This is Peter of <a href="http://www.mudpuppy-studios.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000;">Mudpuppy Pottery</span>.</a><br />

</div><a href="http://www.johnsellberg.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #274e13;">John Sellberg</span></a>; who won a Merit Award, by the way. Go John!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--suI-775WbQ/Trs0OeytLNI/AAAAAAAAANU/7XsBOIyizVQ/s1600/DSC_0043.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--suI-775WbQ/Trs0OeytLNI/AAAAAAAAANU/7XsBOIyizVQ/s320/DSC_0043.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>And Jeff of <a href="http://www.arkansascraftguild.org/artist353.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #20124d;">Daaman Porcelain Jewelry</span>.</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pvesda-vbyY/Trs0LX0Ow2I/AAAAAAAAANM/1lWRVM-Fghw/s1600/DSC_0042.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pvesda-vbyY/Trs0LX0Ow2I/AAAAAAAAANM/1lWRVM-Fghw/s320/DSC_0042.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>Thanks for all the great laughs and photos guys! We'll see you again next year.<br />
Did you know that Memphis is a major distribution center. Every day we would pass this on our way to and from the show...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nRYtTkaflW8/Trs0HWXrDWI/AAAAAAAAANE/4iaNlbSmdPE/s1600/DSC_0038.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nRYtTkaflW8/Trs0HWXrDWI/AAAAAAAAANE/4iaNlbSmdPE/s320/DSC_0038.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Miles of these containers and these big contraptions that move them around. It reminded me of the port of Seattle and all of the shipping containers just like the ones above that were getting moved around to put on freighters. I called this "the land port". It truly was an awesome sight right in the middle of nowhere.<br />
We really like Memphis and it's like old home week in Audubon Park every year.terracottagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01368757639633073947noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7307243353559045513.post-65254054019743068762011-11-15T16:00:00.000-08:002011-11-15T16:00:38.071-08:00...included in such an exceptional catalogMaybe some of you have already seen it.<br />
Maybe you already know.<br />
Michael's work is in the holiday catalog for Uncommon Goods.<br />
It was a HUGE deal for us and it rocked our studio for months. Michael worked hard sculpting, sculpting, and doing some more sculpting. Not to mention all the oxiding and glazing that happened around here. And then there was wrapping, wrapping, wrapping!<br />
Here's Michael with the order before the truck arrived:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8x2LfXlfZsk/Trr1_3f3-VI/AAAAAAAAAM8/2kMxlPFFXx8/s1600/DSC_0029.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8x2LfXlfZsk/Trr1_3f3-VI/AAAAAAAAAM8/2kMxlPFFXx8/s320/DSC_0029.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>This is our studio assistant, Zack:<br />

Here is my first 'socking' of the season. It happened at the 'West End Art Festival' in September. That one was up near Chicago.<br />
Of course, like so many other shows that we did this summer it rained.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VxN8AFNnMi0/TrruwNOZGcI/AAAAAAAAAMs/pD9d7f43pG0/s1600/DSC_0012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VxN8AFNnMi0/TrruwNOZGcI/AAAAAAAAAMs/pD9d7f43pG0/s320/DSC_0012.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>And it rained some more. I sent Michael back to the hotel for Sunday afternoon so that he could do some sculpting. Yeah he always brings his tools and clay with him to every show. So I got to stay at the show in my socks and watch the rain.<br />
What was really sweet about that Sunday is our good friend, Martha Enzler, won an award. Here are some pictures of her and her work.<br />
Yay martha!!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rR8iLDYsyUM/Trruka_91YI/AAAAAAAAAMU/Cd8mevuUyn8/s1600/DSC_0005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rR8iLDYsyUM/Trruka_91YI/AAAAAAAAAMU/Cd8mevuUyn8/s320/DSC_0005.JPG" width="213" /></a></div><br />

We loves Martha and her tiles.<br />
This summer we tried a bunch of new shows with a new (to us) promoter, Erin Melloy. We were genuinely impressed and really look forward to another summer with EM Events.terracottagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01368757639633073947noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7307243353559045513.post-77904382432294078532011-08-15T16:17:00.000-07:002011-08-15T16:17:18.287-07:00"Been there, done that, now let's move on."<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Well folks it's bound to happen. Every artist in our business will sooner or later hit a complete klunker. That show where you wonder why the heck you're there and what planet did you accidently land on. We had such a show. Most of the time it's not the shows fault nor is one's artwork terrible. I chalk it up to being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Actually to be more honest with ourselves it's being in the wrong place no matter what time it is. I always blame myself for not doing enough homework, always wondering how I let this show slip in because I (Victoria) am the one that does all the show research and books them all.</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">"Hi. My name is Victoria Terra and I booked a klunker!"<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Michael was not feeling well and so (to break the norm) I took our studio assistant, Laura, and went to the show without him. It was a good thing. Poor guy would have been really frustrated all weekend. I can't tell you how many times over the weekend that someone walked into our booth and asked me if Michael's work was made out of 'taters'. I kid you not. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">I was floored. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Jaw drop to the ground. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">FLOORED. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">I am reluctant to put the name of the show in writing. But then again it's really not the show's fault. It was us just not being in the right place to sell Michael's work. The show was 'Arts & Crafts At Iroquois'. It's an art show that is part of 'Kentucky Music Weekend'. I thought it had all the right components that would make good selling for us; folk music that draws an intellectual thoughtful crowd, a music festival that's been going on for 35 years, and at an amphitheater in the city of Louisville. I was wrong. "Go me!"</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">For those of you that know me and/or follow this blog you will know that we're not ones to let a bad situation get us down. So I want to share with you some of the fun things that came out of our bizarre weekend. <o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Believe it our not, this was the first time that I set up the booth without Michael. I was a little concerned about a few of the technical things about stabilizing our panels. But with Laura's help we did it. We got the booth set up, stocked, and the office all ready to go about 40 minutes before the show started. All in all it took us the same amount of time that it takes Michael & I. Laura and I were proud of ourselves:<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v_TrnxBJDHs/Tkmfo-A6H2I/AAAAAAAAAL4/kFqQ2y-XlpE/s1600/DSC_0013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v_TrnxBJDHs/Tkmfo-A6H2I/AAAAAAAAAL4/kFqQ2y-XlpE/s320/DSC_0013.JPG" width="320" /></span></span></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

We were driving to our annual wholesale show and stopped in Jonesborough, TN to meet with the buyer for the gift shop at the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000;"><a href="http://www.storytellingcenter.net/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #660000;">International Storytelling Center</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;">. We here at Terra Cottage think that Michael's work is a great fit for a storytelling center. Now we just have to wait and see if the buying committee agrees with us. We had some time to wander about town and happened upon a chocolate shop. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #741b47;"><a href="http://earthandskyconfections.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #274e13;">Earth & Sky Confections</span></a> </span>is a delight and we had fun talking with the father/father-in-law of the owners. Michael and I new at once that this husband and wife team had studied at The French Pastry School in Chicago. We had taken a tour of the school years ago with the girls and we recognized the chocolate design sensibility right away. We knew we had to try some because the chocolates that we had at the school were outstanding. We were not disappointed. We saved our treats for the hotel that night. In our house we like to share our chocolates. First one person will take a bite and then the next. We love to watch each others expressions to see how much they like what they are tasting. It can get rather comical when it's the four of us! Michael and I had a great time sitting in the hotel catching up on cyberspace stuff and trying our boxed chocolates. These chocolates have a great 'mouth feel' and the flavors are wonderfully complex. We know exactly what were getting our best friend Andy for Christmas (he loves good chocolates just like us).</span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;">The next day we drove into Baltimore to set up for <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #134f5c;">The Buyers Market of American Craft</span>. In the biz we call this wholesale show 'The Rosen Show' because it is put on by The Rosen Group. We've been doing this show for about 6 years now and we've made a lot of friends. I always look forward to going and seeing everyone. At a wholesale show all the mediums are groups together in rows. So we are in the midst of clay people all weekend. It's nice because there are other husband & wife teams and I get to talk to other spouses that do what I do for a living. We get to kibbitz about shows and about how to find the best hotel deals & how to better promote our spouse's work. </span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;">Last year the summer Rosen Show was moved from Philadelphia to Baltimore. Which is fine by us because we've got some good friends that live there and we can visit and stay with them. Now I don't know about you but when I think of Maryland I think of crab! And what is more fun then a pitcher of beer, good friends, and pickin' crab?!</span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_cPshuvhLoQ/TjVWp7CwdAI/AAAAAAAAAKE/FvFprvBo_Iw/s1600/DSC_0005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_cPshuvhLoQ/TjVWp7CwdAI/AAAAAAAAAKE/FvFprvBo_Iw/s320/DSC_0005.JPG" width="213" /></a></div><br />

Francisco's Farm feels like an old friend; all warm and comfy. It's not our best show of the year but we keep coming back because the promoter makes all us vendors (artists) feel like a special relative. All the volunteers are friendly and helpful and Marcie (the director) is always attentive. It's a show where there are a lot of artists from our region so it feels like 'old home week' all packed into two days. It's a fun show to be at. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #783f04;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">There is always something special about each show. Something that happens outside of our selling that I find intriguing and I want to share with you. This weekend it was all about the bartering. For years Michael has been bartering other potters for mugs. We must have around two hundred mugs at our house that we have in use. It brings us great joy to open up the cabinet and pick out just the right mug to use. At any time we can summon up the image of our friend the potter while we are drinking from a mug that they made. It makes every day special. Just about a month ago I decided that I wanted to pack up all of my Royal Worcester china and start collecting plates from other potters. So we have started looking at plates at shows and bartering. Here are two plates that we got at this show:</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #783f04;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tuveeG6ZgfA/Tg04qN0RJII/AAAAAAAAAIU/ZQeysJWBdUs/s1600/DSC_0017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #783f04;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tuveeG6ZgfA/Tg04qN0RJII/AAAAAAAAAIU/ZQeysJWBdUs/s320/DSC_0017.JPG" width="320" /></span></span></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #783f04;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Many thanks to Knox Steinbrecher and to <a href="http://www.johnsellberg.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: blue;">John Sellberg</span></a></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #783f04;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"> for their contributions to our budding collection of dinner plates. We looked online and we read the promotional guide book that was in the hotel and nothing was jumping out at us. We had asked our friends on facebook for some suggestions and we decided to skip all those and head back to Cambridge. In Cambridge there is a production pottery house called 'Rowe Pottery'. We noticed that there was a store in the downtown so we thought that it would be interesting to stop by and see what it is like. There were a couple of potters at the festival that work at Rowe Pottery and it would be nice to see what they do.<br />
The Rowe Pottery store was indeed very interesting. It was strange to look at a whole store full of very rustic, country-ish style crockery. It was all so very different than what Michael does and it was so very different than hanging out in the galleries that we normally go to. It was fun to see large blow-up pictures of our acquaintances in the store. There were big posters of Glen & Ric throwing on the wheel; larger than life. <a href="http://www.rowepottery.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #20124d;">Click here</span></a> to see what Rowe Pottery looks like.<br />
On our way out of town we remembered that we had seen a sign for another pottery place. We decided to check it out. What a treat that was! Cambridge Wood-Fired Pottery is a delight of a place. You drive up a long driveway and then you turn a corner and this is what you find.<br />

All of these are made by one person, Mark Skudlarek. This guy is one prolific potter! This is his wood-fired kiln.<br />

On the spot Michael and Mark traded. Mark got a reading glass that say's "R-tist" and Michael got a really cool plate. I used it today, as a matter of fact, for my lunch salad. I'm thrilled! Mark had to take off and go pick up one of his kids but he said we could wander around and take some pictures. I like these of his throwing room. I find it really interesting that he kind of stand/straddles when he is throwing...<br />

What is not to love about being at a show with a bunch of clay people? And even better to be at a show with only clay people! In the twelve years that we have been doing art shows for living there are a few truths that I have come to know.<br />
One of them is this:<br />
Clay people are most often really fun people to be with. You want to hang with clay people.<br />
This past weekend turned out to be a really joyous time. Honestly we didn't make much money but the 'fun' factor made up for it. On Saturday morning as I was setting up our cash box a potter walked by with a pie. She stopped and said to me, "Oh you're new. You don't know about this." She told me all about the church ladies who make pies and sell them at the show. She told me I had better hurry and get down there before all the pies were gone because they go quick. You bet I sorted that change as fast as I could and I hauled it down to the pie booth.<br />
Pies, Pies, Pies. There were so many to choose from:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-05L4h3VfNoI/TfkjV8A21jI/AAAAAAAAAF4/WvH6YEL_2xg/s1600/DSC_0067.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-05L4h3VfNoI/TfkjV8A21jI/AAAAAAAAAF4/WvH6YEL_2xg/s320/DSC_0067.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Apple pies, peach pies, rhubarb pies, oatmeal pies (that was one I had never heard of before), pear & cheddar pies, pecan pies....you name it, they had it! I was gushing. I was so excited. These poor ladies must have thought I was a kook. On Lopez Island where we used to live full time one of my favorite events is 'Bingo For Pies'. What is not to love about pie? I looked, I giggled, I was beside myself with joy. I bought a rhubarb pie because I LOVE RHUBARB. I am nuts about rhubarb. I almost bought the pear & cheddar as well but who needs to be greedy? I bought a beautiful looking rhubarb pie. Like a dope I didn't take a picture of my pie. With the love affair I was having with it all day you'd think that I'd have a photo album of my pie. But alas, all I did was make Michael stop at the Piggly Wiggly on the way back to the hotel that night so that we could get some ice cream to go with my new love interest. I wonder how it feels to be upstaged by pie? That pie was as tasty as it looked. Michael took a picture of me having a piece. He loves to post embarrassing pictures of me so it must be up on his facebook page by now. <a href="http://www.facebook.com/michael.terra"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #073763;">Click here</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #073763;"> </span>to go to his facebook page and see if you can find it.<br />
We had pie for two nights in a row and I even managed to save a piece for Xan. I am amazing! It was a feat of sheer will power.<br />
Okay other than the amazing pie and the pie ladies (Which were all sold out by noon on Saturday. Just like I was told they were going to be.) there was the US Potter Games. What a hoot! A bunch of potters competing in wheel throwing contests.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pBeOE2ui65w/TfkjewxY3EI/AAAAAAAAAGA/pFi0YHPBOf4/s1600/DSC_0073.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pBeOE2ui65w/TfkjewxY3EI/AAAAAAAAAGA/pFi0YHPBOf4/s320/DSC_0073.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>They even have a competition for high school students.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-l8bcXrdQc4Q/Tfkjan0fuZI/AAAAAAAAAF8/Kgup12s7VBo/s1600/DSC_0071.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-l8bcXrdQc4Q/Tfkjan0fuZI/AAAAAAAAAF8/Kgup12s7VBo/s320/DSC_0071.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>I'm not going to go into any more detail about the games because when I went over to take pictures for this blog I was struck with (what I think is) a very funny idea. On the spot I decided that I wanted to film the games and make my own narrated mock-umentary ala Christopher Guest-ish. I started filming and they let me go up on the stage and film away. Everyone was so gracious and good natured about the whole thing. Clay people! I tell ya. So in the next couple of weeks I will get my video together and post it up on our <a href="http://www.youtube.com/terracottage"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #0c343d;">youtube channel</span></a>. Keep an eye out for it.<br />
Saturday night the promoter's hosted a Mexican dinner for all of us complete with lots of local micro-brewed beer. It was great to sit and chat with everyone. Michael got to do his clay related techno-babble with other potters. I think he enjoyed himself immensely.<br />
The show was in a park near a really big lake. It was a beautiful setting and other than all the bugs that showed up on our tent...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Qs91hBZVUa0/TfkjiafFCuI/AAAAAAAAAGE/lAEARggCK-Y/s1600/DSC_0091.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Qs91hBZVUa0/TfkjiafFCuI/AAAAAAAAAGE/lAEARggCK-Y/s320/DSC_0091.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2-kdvCREoDA/TfkjmVEftCI/AAAAAAAAAGI/gq7yJ7Y6i1M/s1600/DSC_0095.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2-kdvCREoDA/TfkjmVEftCI/AAAAAAAAAGI/gq7yJ7Y6i1M/s320/DSC_0095.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>we were really happy to be outside. Cleaning off the tent on Sunday night was a bit yucky.<br />
All in all another great weekend to add to our collection of great weekends. Even though we drove home with our pockets not quite as full as we would like, we did come home with lots of great clay items that we bartered for and with our hearts warmed by camaraderie. We look forward to going back. I'm putting Michael on a high carb diet so that he'll be in shape for the games next year.terracottagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01368757639633073947noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7307243353559045513.post-11157106048210452902011-06-20T21:25:00.000-07:002011-06-20T21:25:50.839-07:00I'm sure on that.Sometimes when we are driving home from a show (usually on a Monday) it's just the same ol', same ol'. We listen to a book on tape, we chat, we take turns driving and I always end up falling asleep at some point (in the passenger seat, of course). Sometimes we stray from the norm and end up doing something extraordinary. Our drive home from the Edina Art Fair aired on the edge of the 'something extraordinary' kind of drive.<br />
Our friend, Martha, told us about this funky antique/really cool stuff place that is right outside of Minneapolis. On the way up to show we had passed this place that had old cars and stuff that Michael could see from the road. If you're thinking that at this point in the drive that I was fast asleep in the passenger seat...You're right. I must have been in a deep snooze because I don't remember seeing anything like that.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Sometime during the weekend Michael was talking to Martha and her boyfriend about all the stuff he saw from the road and they told him that we just had to stop and take a look. That's how we ended up at Hot Sam's in Lakeville, MN.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8kYBpL0Tdh8/TfkbMHqtZ0I/AAAAAAAAAF0/2F0oB4b7Arw/s1600/DSC_0186.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8kYBpL0Tdh8/TfkbMHqtZ0I/AAAAAAAAAF0/2F0oB4b7Arw/s320/DSC_0186.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />

Michael is the co-director of the LowerTown Arts and Music Festival that happens in our neighborhood. This year we had a booth on the street. I walked around and took lots of video footage and forgot to take pictures. Actually my time was really limited because Michael's co-directorship is very demanding and I barely had time to leave our booth. So watch out for the video that I'm going to put together.<br />
The LowerTown show was the first in a run of 4-in-a-row for us. I don't recommend it. We did it. We got through it but lots of bits of our life got left in the breakdown lane. Just like that lone shoe or chair that you see as you're driving on your way to some fun vacation. That was a piece of our life that you saw there sitting lonely and forlorn.<br />
The next show was Cuneo Gardens and that was in Vernon Hills, IL. Great location and potentially a good show but Michael (who was flying solo) got rained out. That show was rained upon, hailed upon, lighteninged upon, and the thunder was so close it shook the tents. I'll blog about that as soon as I get Michael's pictures downloaded onto my computer.<br />
So that brings us to the Edina Art Fair in Edina, MN. Long haul for us (13 hours of driving) but last year it was our best show so we figured we'd better suck it up and go. All in all it was a terrifically fun weekend full of staying and visiting with our good 'clay' friend Martha Enzler:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x-5jBBKiqbc/TfjiG3SfhPI/AAAAAAAAAFM/UpZukOXfbRs/s1600/DSC_0163.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x-5jBBKiqbc/TfjiG3SfhPI/AAAAAAAAAFM/UpZukOXfbRs/s320/DSC_0163.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>This is the type of ceramic artwork that Martha does:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Xsz7rAV1ruI/Tfjhp3wZAoI/AAAAAAAAAE0/gmouo3tbo3E/s1600/DSC_0151.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Xsz7rAV1ruI/Tfjhp3wZAoI/AAAAAAAAAE0/gmouo3tbo3E/s320/DSC_0151.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>She draws a picture, then carves it, then makes a mold of it and then she casts tiles. She does really lovely work!<br />
These are some pictures that I took around Martha's house. When I think of Martha's home I think 'Zen'. When I think of our home I think 'Chaos'. Her place is so tranquil and serene.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-leHZw-HjgpQ/TfjhMIh27VI/AAAAAAAAAEc/WQCa8uiEizg/s1600/DSC_0123.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-leHZw-HjgpQ/TfjhMIh27VI/AAAAAAAAAEc/WQCa8uiEizg/s320/DSC_0123.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B_jD0-yQ9dQ/TfjhVvA9wLI/AAAAAAAAAEk/G_3Nm9DgwsU/s1600/DSC_0133.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B_jD0-yQ9dQ/TfjhVvA9wLI/AAAAAAAAAEk/G_3Nm9DgwsU/s320/DSC_0133.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-J2xVZPFn_qM/TfjhQ6pEcEI/AAAAAAAAAEg/re2uvRwHRrE/s1600/DSC_0125.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-J2xVZPFn_qM/TfjhQ6pEcEI/AAAAAAAAAEg/re2uvRwHRrE/s320/DSC_0125.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--ZMiH4-ABB8/TfjiBrQ8XfI/AAAAAAAAAFI/yXWscnYoJ54/s1600/DSC_0161.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--ZMiH4-ABB8/TfjiBrQ8XfI/AAAAAAAAAFI/yXWscnYoJ54/s320/DSC_0161.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">This last picture is of these white sort of coconut looking things that she made. She was thinking about Buddhism and being all alike yet one-of-a-kind and unique. I love them! I think of Martha and I think of altars in honor of nature and life.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xmlzzOFbJzg/Tfjh809AgKI/AAAAAAAAAFE/AqvCE_eGcAs/s1600/DSC_0159.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xmlzzOFbJzg/Tfjh809AgKI/AAAAAAAAAFE/AqvCE_eGcAs/s320/DSC_0159.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div>Martha and her boyfriend Erik (he shoots these amazing pictures of dancers) were both in the art show as well. You can see one of Erik's photographs in one of the pictures above. His is the one on the table that is leaning against the wall. And "NO" it's not the hula girls. It's the one with the dancer with (what looks like) smoke behind him. <a href="http://www.danceprints.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000;">Click here</span></a> to see Erik's work. Martha unfortunately doesn't have a website. She only displays and sells her work at shows.<br />
We all had an okay show. Not great, not horrible either. We decided that we were all going to go out for dinner at a place near Martha's house.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VMcGQar13ko/TfjhkzyYjgI/AAAAAAAAAEw/uraGvGhzvqE/s1600/DSC_0145.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VMcGQar13ko/TfjhkzyYjgI/AAAAAAAAAEw/uraGvGhzvqE/s320/DSC_0145.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">We walked over to the Holy Land to have the buffet and to our delight we discovered that because it was the end of the day they only charged us $5 each. Michael and I ate there two nights in a row. We love those fabulous 'cheap eats'! Holy Land is a Middle Eastern grocery as well and Michael & I went shopping. We bought olives and halvah. Yummy, yum, yum! All day long at the art show I get to tell people that I was going to the Holy Land. It was just so much fun to say.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">We do so many art shows throughout the year that we've learned that one does not make tons of money at every single art show that you participate in. For us it all works because this is what we do for a living and with all the shows added up it all works. So when we don't do terribly well at show we know to relax and not fret because there is always another show to be had. We live for the good moments and the joy of seeing friends, sharing meals, and visiting new places. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>terracottagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01368757639633073947noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7307243353559045513.post-34946920492468596422011-05-24T08:01:00.000-07:002011-05-24T08:13:42.395-07:00...full of lots of cherished visiting.Silver Spring, MD is quite a hike for us. This was a very special trip for us because we got to stay with very dear family friends in Bethesda, MD. When we were based out of Saratoga Springs, NY we would see our friends, Suzi & Barry Hoffman, often but since our move to Paducah we don't get to see them as much.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BgFQDVS8X4w/Tdu-z4Qj5KI/AAAAAAAAADw/OgmEDUvI7ng/s1600/DSC_0048.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BgFQDVS8X4w/Tdu-z4Qj5KI/AAAAAAAAADw/OgmEDUvI7ng/s320/DSC_0048.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>We needed a Hoffman fix so I booked whatever show in that area that would work into our show schedule. (Yes, sometimes that is all the motivation you need to find a show.) That's how we ended up at the Downtown Silver Spring Fine Arts Festival.<br />
This trip we added on some extra time so that we could do things like enjoying Barry's matzoh brie.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zVlpfES_ryM/TdvATTvlZyI/AAAAAAAAAD0/aJqjFaIe7D8/s1600/DSC_0045.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zVlpfES_ryM/TdvATTvlZyI/AAAAAAAAAD0/aJqjFaIe7D8/s320/DSC_0045.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>It was so 'Oh my god' yummy!!<br />
The show was fun. We had two surprises.<br />
One was from Alonzo Davis who owns a studio here in LowerTown but lives near Silver Spring. He came by our booth and said hello. That was sweet.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>And the other surprise was when someone came into our booth and told us that they just met the other artist from Paducah that was up the street. "What other artist?" I thought. So I trekked up the road and to our mutual surprise it was another artist from Paducah...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M5jZv-sBUKw/TdvBb18NdiI/AAAAAAAAAD8/-bwvDV0HB_0/s1600/DSC_0035.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M5jZv-sBUKw/TdvBb18NdiI/AAAAAAAAAD8/-bwvDV0HB_0/s320/DSC_0035.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>It was Kevin Myers. We've met Kevin many times and it was so much fun to see him at a show! Kevin does some amazing fresco work. He had just done a show in VA the weekend before and so he picked up this show to do before heading back home. (We art show folk will do that a lot. We'll try to find shows in the same general area and spend a week or two out there and then head home.) We had dinner together after breaking down on Sunday evening. Here are some pictures of his frescoes that were in his booth.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9ps6Pw4CfQs/TdvB2tWvCeI/AAAAAAAAAEM/N8YPVKGuo_I/s1600/DSC_0041.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9ps6Pw4CfQs/TdvB2tWvCeI/AAAAAAAAAEM/N8YPVKGuo_I/s320/DSC_0041.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7kCIsdkfOcI/TdvBv-PfpWI/AAAAAAAAAEI/bxcFEtprwdY/s1600/DSC_0040.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7kCIsdkfOcI/TdvBv-PfpWI/AAAAAAAAAEI/bxcFEtprwdY/s320/DSC_0040.JPG" width="213" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TOjoXsWWzBE/TdvBiuWNLnI/AAAAAAAAAEA/TIwkiS1QlKk/s1600/DSC_0037.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TOjoXsWWzBE/TdvBiuWNLnI/AAAAAAAAAEA/TIwkiS1QlKk/s320/DSC_0037.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>I really like his work. You can check out his website by <a href="http://www.newfresco.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #351c75;">clicking here</span></a>.<br />
There's one more thing about our weekend that I need to share with you. It's this bug:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Gasn1TrrlRk/TdvBWwoLnOI/AAAAAAAAAD4/-ATl9V99ZVg/s1600/DSC_0024.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Gasn1TrrlRk/TdvBWwoLnOI/AAAAAAAAAD4/-ATl9V99ZVg/s320/DSC_0024.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>He was hanging out on our extension cord one day. He was so amazing looking that I had to take his picture. Don't know what he was but I found him fascinating.<br />
Oh (okay just one 'one more' thing) and this was our first road trip that we took with our dog, Nestle. She did great in the car! She didn't even complain when we stopped in Lexington on the way home and loaded up the car with 1000 lbs. of clay that she had to sit on for the rest of the trip. Oh what a fantastic dog we have!<br />
It was a great weekend full of lots of cherished visiting.terracottagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01368757639633073947noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7307243353559045513.post-10304946663162632332011-05-24T07:15:00.000-07:002011-05-24T08:11:35.828-07:00...I'm too honest for that.Oops it's been a while. Michael and I both got Spring colds and with all the rain, rain, rain, and more rain around here we've had our hands full. I'm happy to report that we are both feeling much better these days and our neighborhood survived all the flooding.<br />
Since our last blog we have done a few shows....<br />
4 Bridges in Chattanooga, TN:<br />
We got to stay with some wonderful friends and Michael flew out that weekend to NYC to go to a Memorial for an Uncle of his that had passed away the previous summer. It was a hectic and complicated weekend with Michael not being able to fly out Sunday morning as planned. He arrived with the van just in time to load it with all our stuff on Sunday evening. Thus no pics for the weekend. I was too busy manning the booth.<br />
OMB Magic City in Birmingham, AL:<br />
Michael went down and did that one solo because it was Quilt Week here in Paducah and we had our apartment rented out. That show was the weekend after the big tornado and we had mixed feelings about going down to a city that was in the middle of crisis. But we had already paid for the booth and the hotel and the show was still on. So off he went with some boxes of clothes and shoes that we gathered to take down to the emergency shelters. Go figure...it was our best show so far this year! We were stunned. Michael had a great weekend. We guess that folks needed a good distraction and they got it. Michael's work was met with great enthusiasm. Thank you Birmingham!!<br />
My next post will be all about the next show we did in Silver Spring, MD.<br />
Sorry for the lapse. I wish I could promise you that it won't happen again but I'm too honest for that.terracottagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01368757639633073947noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7307243353559045513.post-41846373057827270422011-04-06T06:36:00.000-07:002011-04-06T06:36:26.860-07:00Just Another Breakdown<iframe width="480" height="295" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/sXv4Scuqwi0?fs=1" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe><div><br /></div><div>Here it is! The latest video brought to you by Terra Cottage. This is a 'behind the scenes' peek into what it's like to breakdown after a weekend art show. Let us know what you think.</div>terracottagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01368757639633073947noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7307243353559045513.post-22154518609374635742011-03-29T12:23:00.000-07:002011-03-30T09:56:53.317-07:00...full of many kinds of abundance. Our last show was The Outdoor Art Show in Fairhope, AL.<br />
We made some money. Good!<br />
We got to walk on the beach. Even Better! (<a href="http://www.facebook.com/album.php?id=774399902&aid=345423"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #351c75;">CLICK HERE</span></a> for pictures of us on the beach.)<br />
We had a terrific neighbor. Fantastic!<br />
We got to visit with our friend Daryl. Super!<br />
And the weather was warm, hot even. The bestest of all!!!<br />
If you read my previous post. You did, didn't you? If not then stop reading this one right now and start reading the one below.<br />
Okay, now that you are back.<br />
Our show in Fairhope was sweet, to say the least. We got to be surprised by castles down the street. (See? Now that you read the blog below you know all about what I'm talkin' about.) And we had the most fun with our neighbor and wood artist, Peg Martinez.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GkT064C52aw/TZD7N2Bk8aI/AAAAAAAAADo/yC5So5vb2pg/s1600/DSC_0048.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GkT064C52aw/TZD7N2Bk8aI/AAAAAAAAADo/yC5So5vb2pg/s320/DSC_0048.JPG" width="213" /></a></div><br />
Having a delightful neighbor is a joy. And boy did we have a joyous weekend! We laughed. We joshed each other. We told each other stories. Not only is Peg a very talented wood artist she is also a marathon runner. She set a goal for herself to run a marathon in every state. She only has 9 states left to go. "Whew" I say while wiping my brow. Debbie, Peg's partner, had me engaged in the most intense story about their experiences after Hurricane Katrina. Peg & Debbie live in New Orleans (obviously). We would be sitting on our chairs outside our booths with our heads together, Debbie telling me about men with guns and animals having to be left behind. Then someone would come into one of our booths and we would have to go and take care of business. Then it was back to our chairs so I could find out what happened next. Peg must have said, "Are you still telling her that story?!" about half a dozen times throughout the day. Yes, Yes, Yes she was telling me that story. I ate it up like a bar of good chocolate. Ah what great neighbors!<br />
<a href="http://www.squarepegnola.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #660000;">CLICK HERE</span></a> to see Peg's website.<br />
These are some of the boxes that Peg makes:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jAngVu0Vaug/TZD7ELR_86I/AAAAAAAAADg/0NgquCPI4cU/s1600/DSC_0044.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jAngVu0Vaug/TZD7ELR_86I/AAAAAAAAADg/0NgquCPI4cU/s320/DSC_0044.JPG" width="213" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q9PrjdN8Kmo/TZD7JJGERtI/AAAAAAAAADk/acsvefRHzPg/s1600/DSC_0046.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q9PrjdN8Kmo/TZD7JJGERtI/AAAAAAAAADk/acsvefRHzPg/s320/DSC_0046.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>And she won a prize to boot!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bymf-DUVa08/TZIvHgTrljI/AAAAAAAAADs/7Yimg0rerTY/s1600/DSC_0043.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bymf-DUVa08/TZIvHgTrljI/AAAAAAAAADs/7Yimg0rerTY/s320/DSC_0043.JPG" width="213" /></a></div><br />
Peg is new to the show circuit. Way to go Peg!!!<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #660000;"> </span><br />
Other than the beach and our great neighbors we got to see our friend Daryl. We adore Daryl and it's always a treat to meet up with her at a show. Daryl is from New England, like me, and she now lives in Louisiana with her boyfriend Kevin. She is one of these artists that divides up shows with their partner/collaborator. So Kevin was off at another show in somewhere, USA. We all went out to dinner; Daryl, great neighbors, another friend of Daryl's and us. <a href="http://www.facebook.com/album.php?id=774399902&aid=345677"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #0c343d;">Look at my pictures on my facebook page</span></a>. You can see the sunset over Mobile Bay and the picture that I took of the Super Moon. I sent a picture of all of us at the table to Kevin assuring him that we were having no fun without him. I lied.<br />
Daryl was in another show that butted right up against the show that we were in. Together they make one HUGE show and you really couldn't tell where one started and the other began. I walked up several blocks in the sun (the glorious sun!) so that I could take some pictures of Daryl's work for you.<br />
This is Daryl. Here's a tid-bit about Daryl....She's an amazing dancer! One of these days I'm going to stay at her house in LA and we're going to do nothing but dance to Zydeco music. She'll have to teach clumsy ole me. It'll be fun.<br />

It was a great weekend full of many kinds of abundance.terracottagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01368757639633073947noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7307243353559045513.post-32453918494830099202011-03-27T08:50:00.000-07:002011-03-27T08:50:22.219-07:00... a very sweet surprise. Many times when we are at shows we will happen upon something that is a totally sweet and unexpected surprise. This happened to us last weekend while we were at The Outdoor Art Show in Fairhope, AL.<br />
Our booth was not in the best location. It was one of those shows that you don't know where your booth is until you check in. We checked in. We walked to our booth location. We walked back to the 'check in' and asked if we could move our booth to a more central spot.<br />
They said, 'no'.<br />
We said, 'allrighty then'.<br />
And that was that.<br />
We set up our booth and as we were setting up we hoped for the best. Having your booth off the beaten path of the flow of foot traffic can, a lot of times, be such a drag. In other words, if the show is set up along a main street and your booth is on a side street you just might have a terrible show. There goes the mortgage money down the drain.<br />
It turns out that we were indeed not in the best location BUT we had a good show. There were enough people walking down our side street that liked Michael's work and we sold quite a bit.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>If we had moved our booth to a new location on that first night we most likely would have never seen this....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-FLP6gR4lE5w/TY6amtQLcNI/AAAAAAAAACo/x-85F0KBE6U/s1600/DSC_2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-FLP6gR4lE5w/TY6amtQLcNI/AAAAAAAAACo/x-85F0KBE6U/s320/DSC_2.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>This was way, way down at the end of our street. We could see it in the distance. I thought there was a park down there and it was a sign for the park. Then on the last day of the show we went to park down there so that our van would be close by for when we load out. It wasn't a park at all it was these two castles:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-DNsGbe2FEGM/TY6cKACzyNI/AAAAAAAAADQ/6r0npf1nh2I/s1600/DSC_0041.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-DNsGbe2FEGM/TY6cKACzyNI/AAAAAAAAADQ/6r0npf1nh2I/s320/DSC_0041.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-42CitC35O58/TY6bBvknLzI/AAAAAAAAAC4/jJxYfDJYZBo/s1600/DSC_0019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-42CitC35O58/TY6bBvknLzI/AAAAAAAAAC4/jJxYfDJYZBo/s320/DSC_0019.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>The first castle was built by Craig Sheldon and the second castle is being built by his daughter and son-in-law, Pagan & Dean Mosher.<br />
Dean is a very warm and engaging person. He's an historical painter. <a href="http://www.deanmosher.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000;">CLICK HERE</span></a> to see Dean's website.<br />
He and Pagan collect iron stone off the beaches of Mobile Bay and they use it to mosaic their house. Just like Dean's father-in-law did. Dean was so gracious and he let me walk around their property and take some pictures of their castle:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-eriYIycMQlw/TY6arkqAPrI/AAAAAAAAACs/jNf1RjwfcY8/s1600/DSC_3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-eriYIycMQlw/TY6arkqAPrI/AAAAAAAAACs/jNf1RjwfcY8/s320/DSC_3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>This is the bridge that leads up to their castle.<br />
And these are some pictures of around the castle:<br />

What a treat! Dean and Pagan were so very charming. I was walking around taking pictures and Pagan was out on the lawn spray painting fabric that was to be part of a dragon costume. Thank you Dean and Pagan! It was truly a pleasure to meet you both and to have the opportunity to visit your lovely home!<br />
So many times in life we happen upon the unexpected.<br />
So many times what seems to be the wrong location can turn itself around and become just the right place to be to stumble upon a very sweet surprise.terracottagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01368757639633073947noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7307243353559045513.post-16275799909438528392011-03-13T10:49:00.000-07:002011-03-13T10:49:41.809-07:00On The Road With Michael & Victoria<iframe width="480" height="295" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/h9m4sJZhCYw?fs=1" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe>terracottagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01368757639633073947noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7307243353559045513.post-90984998013765748412011-03-11T08:03:00.000-08:002011-03-11T08:03:50.852-08:00A toast to the new kid on the block.Last weekend we were in Frisco, TX. We've been 'hot to trot' to try a show in Texas since our move to Paducah, KY. We hear good things about shows in that huge state and now we can actually drive there in a day.<br />
So, I booked a show.<br />
Art On The Square.<br />
I can't tell you how many shows there are that are called that.<br />
Mostly we wanted to get our butts there so that we could network. I had called a friend of ours who had done the show last year and she told me emphatically to, "Stay away!". So I went into the show thinking that it was going to be (what I call) a 'throw-away' show. Mostly those are shows that we think that we aren't going to do well at but we usually have another agenda (other than mortgage money) for being there. Like visiting someone, or wanting to be there so we can network. This was our 'networking' show. I was determined to meet as many of the artists that live in Texas that I could and pick their brains about good shows in their fine state that aren't heavily advertised in our trade magazines. These are small shows that people usually do well at and the booth fees don't usually cost you an arm and leg. We like those shows.<br />
It turns out that not only did I get to network myself silly but we had a decent show. What a welcome surprise. We walked away thinking that we'd like to do that show again. Go Frisco!<br />
At the show we met Sally. Sally is so adorable!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Lx66SpcwbMo/TXo_Nh-O2xI/AAAAAAAAACM/YlTwi2sU3a0/s1600/DSC_0189.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Lx66SpcwbMo/TXo_Nh-O2xI/AAAAAAAAACM/YlTwi2sU3a0/s320/DSC_0189.JPG" width="213" /></a></div><br />
And she makes these:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-HKZmERSqC7Y/TXo_GMsbEDI/AAAAAAAAACI/cbswQuhuk1Q/s1600/DSC_0188.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-HKZmERSqC7Y/TXo_GMsbEDI/AAAAAAAAACI/cbswQuhuk1Q/s320/DSC_0188.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Can you guess what they are?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2lS7gYj-PY0/TXo_Bq-irGI/AAAAAAAAACE/J6uyZb313YI/s1600/DSC_0186.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2lS7gYj-PY0/TXo_Bq-irGI/AAAAAAAAACE/J6uyZb313YI/s320/DSC_0186.JPG" width="213" /></a></div><br />
Duh. Yes it is a chicken. (And, oh my, I love these chickens!)<br />
They are footstools.<br />
Seriously.<br />
Unless you are like this little girl and you're convinced that this is a ride....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-jEi1IqzwRWk/TXpC3qC40VI/AAAAAAAAACg/vvUcNJykC18/s1600/DSC_0197.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-jEi1IqzwRWk/TXpC3qC40VI/AAAAAAAAACg/vvUcNJykC18/s320/DSC_0197.JPG" width="213" /></a></div><br />
These are the most playful and whimisical footstools I have ever seen. They are hand-felted wool with brass feet. If you touch their heads they will slightly bobble up and down for you. I LOVE THESE CHICKENS! They have been Victoria tested and approved.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-rx2ymiUTc24/TXpDIoDdf5I/AAAAAAAAACk/uurv__YR_8M/s1600/DSC_0200.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-rx2ymiUTc24/TXpDIoDdf5I/AAAAAAAAACk/uurv__YR_8M/s320/DSC_0200.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>Check out Sally's website at <a href="http://www.thecitygirlfarm.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red;">The City Girl Farm</span></a>. <a href="http://www.thecitygirlfarm.blogspot.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #38761d;">Click Here</span></a> to go to her blog.<br />
Sally also won first place in the 3D Mixed Media category.<br />
It is so refreshing to see new and young faces at our art shows.<br />
A big warm welcome Sally!<br />
We wish her great fun and good fortune in all her endeavors. And we are excited to see what she will come up with next.<br />
A toast to the new kid on the block!<br />

In our line of work (doing art shows for living) people drive a lot and to a lot of different places. We always say to people, "Have an uneventful drive home" at the end of the show after our vans are all packed and we're saying our 'goodbyes'.<br />
We had an eventful drive home from our wholesale show "The Buyers Market of American Craft". The show was over at 3:00 in the afternoon and we broke down the booth, loaded up the car, went into the Asian District for Vietnamese food and then got on the road. We were headed to Johnstown PA to stay the night with our dear, dear friends and fellow artists, Terry & Mark Smith of Wild Ravens. <a href="http://www.wildravens.net/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: blue;">Check out their website. </span></a>. On the way we drove right into a snow storm. Finally when we were down to about 10 ft. of visibility in front of the car and we knew that we had nothing but PA mountains in front of us I got onto the smart phone and looked for the closest hotel. There was one hotel ahead of us right off the next exit about two miles ahead and it had good reviews. Thank you google maps. I called and they had one room left. We took it.<br />
Sometimes you luck out. We got to stay in this totally sweet place (The Kenmar Motel, somewhere about two hours outside of Philly heading West off the turnpike in the mountains). The hotel is owned by an elder couple who live right there. The outside is flooded with pink lighting and it looked quite charming in the snow.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Es9G8dQa1-c/TXabeGyeuhI/AAAAAAAAAB0/PPMnJn7N2pc/s1600/DSC_0112.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Es9G8dQa1-c/TXabeGyeuhI/AAAAAAAAAB0/PPMnJn7N2pc/s320/DSC_0112.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Thankfully I had borrowed Xan's snow boots before we left Paducah.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1hsW1LHNE_U/TXabsvDTYvI/AAAAAAAAAB4/jNAz6Wh0rx0/s1600/DSC_0116.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1hsW1LHNE_U/TXabsvDTYvI/AAAAAAAAAB4/jNAz6Wh0rx0/s320/DSC_0116.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
This is Michael in the morning scraping of Molly (our van).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-hGBL2cip-Tg/TXacBC-jn3I/AAAAAAAAAB8/srHul5V5eMA/s1600/DSC_0123.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-hGBL2cip-Tg/TXacBC-jn3I/AAAAAAAAAB8/srHul5V5eMA/s320/DSC_0123.JPG" width="213" /></a></div><br />
To make the whole stay worthwhile (especially to miss out on seeing Terry & Mark) the owner made us blueberry waffles for breakfast. This was eventful.<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #351c75;">BLUEBERRY WAFFLES!</span><br />
Forget the snow, the lack of visibility, the self pity of not seeing dear extended family. We got pampered by a nice woman who looked us in the eyes and asked if we would like a blueberry waffle before getting on the road. Ya think?terracottagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01368757639633073947noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7307243353559045513.post-62039045430981657242011-03-08T06:51:00.000-08:002011-03-08T06:51:41.569-08:00We always look forward to Philly.I'm sitting in the car catching up on the posts for our new blog. This is it folks. The much romanticized and dreamed about life of a working artist family. We get to do things like hook up our computers to the cigarette lighter in our 15 passenger van and hope for some sort of free wifi in the shopping plaza in somewhere TX where we are at a show. But I get ahead of myself. Let's go back a couple of weeks to Philadelphia.<br />
Philadelphia.<br />
We really like Philadelphia.<br />
We are there at least once a year for The Buyers Market of American Craft. It's a wholesale show (the only one that we do) and we in the biz call it 'The Rosen Show' because Wendy Rosen is the promoter. We look forward to this show. We've been doing it for 5 or so years now and we've got fellow friend artists that we get to see, good restaurants (the PA Convention Center is right next to the Asian District) to eat at, and really nice gallery and gift shop owners that we get to meet (and sell to *grin*).<br />
For the past two years we have set up right next to our good buds from 'Mudpuppy Pottery'. Doing this show is particularly fun because the show is laid out by medium. That means that everyone in our aisle does clay. It's quite cool to be surrounded by your peers and we all have a good time. If there is anything I've learned in the past twelve years is that clay people are more often then not FRIENDLY FOLK and they love to talk about glazes. But I regress. This is Adam who works at Mudpuppy. He makes us laugh all day long:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zKn1K07Tx2c/TXZAZ-3Z5CI/AAAAAAAAABk/6i9Q38AaDWE/s1600/DSC_0044.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zKn1K07Tx2c/TXZAZ-3Z5CI/AAAAAAAAABk/6i9Q38AaDWE/s320/DSC_0044.JPG" width="213" /></a></div><br />
And this is Peter Lippincott who is 'Mudpuppy'.<br />

It is mosaic work done by Isaiah Zagar. <a href="http://www.facebook.com/album.php?id=774399902&aid=342335"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: blue;">Click here</span></a> to see the photo album that is on my facebook page.<br />

By 4:00 in the afternoon we were out of the 900 bowls that we brought for the day. We are looking forward to next year and already Michael is making plans. Michael gave the Community Kitchen a check for $12,500 dollars. You read that right. That is how much was raised. How exciting is that?<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: blue;"> </span><a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Empty-Bowls-Project-of-Paducah/178013165561968?ref=ts"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: blue;">Click here</span></a> to go the Empty Bowls facebook page and you can see the picture of Michael handing over that glorious check to the Community Kitchen. You will need to scroll down through a couple of posts and there it will be. Oh and while you're there become a fan or 'like' it. Whatever it is your supposed to do on that page. Then you can <a href="http://www.facebook.com/album.php?id=774399902&aid=339279"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: blue;">click here</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: blue;"> </span>to go see the pictures that I took that are on my facebook page. Thanks to everyone who helped from restaurants to glazers. And a special big thank-you to our own beloved Michael for putting together a great event.terracottagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01368757639633073947noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7307243353559045513.post-46548036881152234922011-02-13T07:10:00.000-08:002011-02-13T07:11:17.550-08:00EMPTY BOWLS PROJECT<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="295" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/pjdPEZg41js?fs=1" width="480"></iframe><br />
